A. MAY

– Diễn tả sự xin phép (Permission)

  • Mom, may I go out tonight?
    (Mẹ ơi, con có thể ra ngoài chơi tối nay không?)

– Đề nghị 1 cách lịch sự (Polite offer)

  • May I help you carry the luggage?
    (Tôi có thể giúp cô mang hành lý được không?)

– Diễn tả 1 sự việc có khả năng xảy ra trong tương lai (Possibility): khả năng này không chắc chắn

  • I’m afraid that it may rain today.
    (Tôi sợ rằng hôm nay sẽ mưa)
  • may be coming home next week.
    (Có thể con sẽ về nhà vào tuần tới)

– Được thêm vào như 1 sự mở đầu cho câu hoặc nhấn mạnh ý (Rhetorical device)

  • May I be frank: you’re such a fool!
    (Để tôi nói thẳng: cậu đúng là thằng ngốc)

– Dùng trong câu cảm thán, hay để diễn tả một lời cầu chúc.

  • May all your dreams come true!
    (Cầu cho mọi ước mơ của bạn trở thành hiện thực)

– 

B. MIGHT

– Diễn tả 1 sự việc có khả năng xảy ra trong tương lai (Possibility), nhưng khả năng này ít xảy ra hơn so với may.

  • He might call you.
    (Anh ấy có thể sẽ gọi cho cậu)

– Diễn tả sự xin phép 1 cách lịch sự

  • Might I ask you a few questions?
    (Tôi có thể hỏi bạn vài câu được không?)

– Đưa ra đề nghị: để gợi ý về 1 hành động thay vì khẳng định chính xác những gì phải làm

  • You might ask Tim about the quiz, he can help you.
    (Cậu có thể hỏi Tim về câu đố, anh ta có thể giúp đấy)

– Nhấn mạnh sự tức giận

  • I’ve been traveled a long way to see you, you might try to give me the answer.
    (Tôi đã đi 1 đoạn đường xa để gặp anh, anh có thể cổ gắng cho tôi câu trả lời chứ)

– Giới thiệu các thông tin khác nhau: might được dùng để đưa ra các thông tin trái ngược hoặc khác nhau trong câu. Điều này giúp nhấn mạnh các kết quả, kịch bản, hành động khác nhau

  • We might not get the first position, but I’m proud of my team and all their efforts.
    (Có thể chúng tôi không đứng nhất, nhưng tôi tự hào vì đội của tôi và những cố gắng của họ)

– Được thêm vào như 1 sự mở đầu cho câu hoặc nhấn mạnh ý

  • Might I add that I have a great time with you.
    (Tôi đã có khoảng thời gian rất tuyệt với bạn)

 

– may/might have + V3/-ed: “có thể là …”: diễn tả sự suy đoán về việc nào đó nhưng không chắc chắn (40%)

  • I don’t know where the letter is. I might have thrown it away.
    (Tôi không biết lá thư kia ở đâu. Có thể tôi đã vứt nó rồi)
